Mapping 2014

Jill K. Berry, wrote a book called Personal Geographies: Mixed-Media Map-Making.  I read her book when it first came out in 2011 and have been wanting to make an arty map ever since.  Sometimes new things intimidate me and so they have to float about in my head for a long time before I make them.  I am a literal and linear thinker with a lot of things and just thinking about making an arty map has been stretching my brain in all kinds of unusual and interesting yoga poses!  Recently Jill issued a challenge to draw a Map of 2014 for a blog hop she is hosting in January - here is how she describes what she would like everyone to do:
"This project is about making a  map of the future, in particular the year 2014.
You can approach this in many ways, and here are some simple guidelines to get you started.
  1. Pick a subject or focus
    1. Goals
    2. Travels
    3. Relationship(s)
    4. Career
    5. Health
    6. Personal Journey
    7. And on and on…
  1. Pick a medium
    1. Drawing
    2. Collage
    3. Journaling
    4. Mixed Media
    5. Textile
    6. You get the idea
Make some simple sketches of the journey of 2014. None of it has to be literal, it can be one line from here to there, or a river of lines and tributaries with lots of topography you can label.
Make the map however complex or simple you like, keeping in mind your intention for 2014. This should be a heartstring, not a masterpiece for the Smithsonian. Make it true rather than perfect."
 Jill's maps are awesome.

I love these maps and the ideas they portray.

I am having a hard time coming up with how I want to approach my map of 2014.  I think of time as linear, like a map of I-80 across the United States:Hodge_Lincoln_Highway_map_I_80.jpg
Start at one side of the country and move across to the other side, which actually seems a bit dull.  Perhaps I can challenge myself and think of time more like the 10th Doctor Who described.big_ball_of_timey_wimey_doctor_who.gif

So if Time is a big ball of wibbly, wobbly, timey, wimey stuff then HOW do I draw that in two dimensions?

There are a lot of personal maps I've seen with something in the center and things coming out from it, like a wheel or a map of Rome.

It's close but maybe not exactly what I have in mind.
Actually I'm not sure what I have in mind!
What will 2014 bring for me?  What do I want to plan for 2014?
So many decisions to make!
And now is the time!
I'll post again about what I decide to do later.  If you would like to join the journey by making a Map of 2014 for yourself and add your map to the blog hop then hop on over to Jill's blog for details and join along!

In the editor's note of the latest Quilting Arts Magazine, Vivika Hansen DeNegre wrote about having a guide word for the year. I like that idea. I haven't decided on mine yet. But it would be cool to design a map around a guide word with roads leading off of it.
DARN. Now you may have given me another project!

Oh, now that is a neat idea. I'm always saying about my wee hamlet that all the streets end in trees...I wonder what it would be like to make a tree-focused village map...Not before Christmas! LOL!
