Something About Nothing

On August 2, 2019, I started my second 100 day project. This one was 100 days of pattern. My initial idea was to use both old and new stamps to create these patterns, but life happens.  Day 1 - 36 - all hand carved stamps About day 45 I had to leave town and decided using iOrnament to create designs would be easier than dragging all my carving and printing materials with me. Can you tell where I stopped using hand carved stamps? There are a few days of stamps mixed in with the digital drawings. Most of the time I took the stamped images and used an app called Prisma to change up the colors. It would be difficult to print the stamps in these colorways without the app. Day 37 - 72 - A mix of hand carved stamps and digital drawings. The view from our room in Virginia Beach I taught two stamp carving classes while at Art and Soul. My demo stamp. A wonderful quarter turn repeat stamp! Simple designs make fabulous patterns. They can even do unexpected things! I carved a chicken repeat for Glenny while watching my students carve.

It's here!   The article I wrote for Quilting Arts Magazine has been published and my copy is here! It is moments like these when I am listed alongside artists I admire, that I feel humbled. There are so many talented people out there (just check social media!).  How did I get here? How did I get lucky enough to be a part of this publication? Luck might be a part of it, but It has also been a lot of work too.  Work I have enjoyed immensely. I am grateful to be a part of this fiber community.   Keiko is now famous with her photo featured in my studio article. She is a big part of my studio! I'm not sure which editor wrote the article about my studio but I really like what she wrote. Keiko and I have been working hard. . .  . . . And sometimes hardly working. . .  . . .because when it's winter, sometimes you just need to stop and watch some Paul Hollywood .  The icicles keep getting longer. . .  . . .and longer.  Pretty soon they might be growing from the ground up!  Brrrr  But seriously, I am working, I just can't show you what it is yet!  I have an article coming up in  Quilting Arts magazine on creating carved stamp repeats. I'm looking forward to the warmth as well as the article being done. The worst part of this article is that they want a photo of me and my studio. That meant I had to CLEAN UP the studio, AND take a shower. Just kidding, I do shower regularly, sometimes. But seriously, I'm not a fan of taking photos of myself. I had the opportunity to teach two stamp carving classes at Art and Soul . The first class was a beginning stamp carving class. The students did a great job! The second class was learning how to create repeat carving stamps. Darla's awesome designs. Lara and her lovely designs. Ruth's intricate designs. And while everyone was busy designing and carving I made a stamp too. The ladies in my Bojagi Fusion class were a lot of fun!   They created some lovely pieces. One day we had some free time and Kristin La Flame and Gerrie Congdon picked Liz Kettle and I up at the hotel to show us around a bit of Portland. We visited Bolt . . .  . . .where Liz easily found her favorite color. We had a great lunch of Thai food followed by dessert at a cute coffee shop. We also visited another beautiful shop called Modern Domestic. My daughter loves plaid flannels so I had to get a photo of these! ...
