Something About Nothing

FYI: In an attempt to catch up the blog with the last year AND stay up to date, I'll be attempting two short posts a week. One that will show what I am currently working on, and one that will be back dated. Hope it doesn't confuse anyone too much (myself included!) A few years ago I took a class from Victoria Findlay Wolfe called Thunderstruck . One of my bucket list quilts was to make a star quilt, so of course I jumped on the chance to take this class at Craft Napa. Victoria taught how to piece Y-seams, and she made them so easy! I only finished a fourth of the quilt at Craft Napa . After putting it aside for months, I finally finished the piecing. The best part was that Victoria's instructions were so easy to follow that finishing the piecing was a breeze. I then set to hand quilting it with 12 weight thread from Wonderfil . Before Quilt Market opens there are a number of classes, called Schoolhouse, available to attendees. The half hour classes are the place to see the latest fabrics, patterns, and products. Last January I took a class at Craft Napa with Victoria Findlay Wolfe and only completed one fourth of the top in class.  I finally pulled the parts and the pattern out to complete the top. And now it's done!  I'm so happy with myself! I've always wanted to make a lone star type quilt and now I've done it and it all lays flat.  

The main reason I went to New York was to attend Quilt Alliance's Quilters Take Manhattan. There were several events before the main conference and the one I attended was  Victoria Findlay Wolfe 's trunk show in her loft. The quilts were all gorgeous. I love star quilts!!!  I really enjoyed hearing about how Victoria started in art as a painter, before discovering quilting, and her journey to where she is today.  Victoria is always coming up with creative new patterns.  Which reminds me, I need to finish my Thunderstruck quilt from Craft Napa!

I started my birthday in New York by taking a little trip to Victoria Findlay Wolfe's NY Shop. I bought myself some fabrics which I plan on over-dyeing and/or stamping on top of. Later, Iris and I went to Chelsea Market  and  had a lovely time exploring all the shops and getting samples of food.    This green apple sorbet was divine!  Iris, John and I had dinner at the apartment and a cake that got better everyday that week. I was very grateful to spend my birthday with such wonderful people.

I am leaving for Craft Napa today to take classes from some great teachers!  One of the classes is Thunderstruck Star Improv taught by Victoria Findlay Wolfe .  I have always wanted to learn to make a Star Quilt and so I knew I had to take this class!  I decided I wanted to create the class project from my own dyed and printed fabrics.  I have brought a selection of indigo dyed fabrics, as well as some snow dyed fabrics I created the other night - or should I say morning?  It was about 3 a.m. when I started the process. The snow was completely melted when I woke up later that day. I liked the indigo blue. . . . . .but not so much the hot pink and fire red. So I over dyed it with fire red using a low water immersion. I didn't get photos of the green ones but they didn't come out exactly as expected either.  It's all good.  I'm getting on a plan in about 7 hours and going to have a great time no matter what.
