National Museum of African American History and Culture

Image
Took an afternoon to see some of the National Museum of African American History and Culture  My first priority was to see the visual art section. Mothership by Jefferson Pinder Black Jesus by Clementine Hunter Praying Ministers by Jacob Lawrence Walking by Charles Alston No World by Kara Walker Church Ladies by Sabra Brown Martin Stopped in the cafeteria for a yummy lunch. This artifact was particular touching to me.  Four hours was not enough time to enjoy even half of the museum. I look forward to going back another time.

Tarnish

Image
Recently my husband and I went to Washington DC to see our oldest daughter graduate with her Master's degree.  Unfortunately, it was a quick trip, but well worth the time to congratulate our daughter on a job well done! I am actually amazed at what we were able to fit in while we were there.  One morning we hopped on the Metro red line out to Rockville, MD, to see the  SAQA  Regional Quilt Show called Tarnish .   I enjoyed seeing quilts made by my fellow SAQA members, many of whom I've come to know online. Shows like this are always so inspiring for me. Here are just a few of my favorite pieces: Echo's of the Past by Sandy Curran   Ten of Cups by Lesley Riley  Dominate by Kristin La Flamme Past is Present (left) and  Future is in the Water (right)  by  Linda Colsh   Winter's Tarnish by Diane Rusin Dorin Tarnish will continue until June 1st so if you are in the DC area, ...

The Kindness Chronicles

Image
How did it get to be August already?  I missed the beginning of the month and so I am late in posting my Kindness Chronicles. I had the opportunity of traveling to DC with my oldest daughter, mother-in-law and brother-in-law for 5 days to look for an apartment for my daughter whilst bil was in meetings.  It is amazing how many kindnesses you can observe while traveling: There was the TSA officer who was bright and cheery.  Perhaps it was the beginning of her shift but no matter the reason it was a kindness to everyone who had stood in a very long line waiting their turn to arrive to a cheerful face who asked how their day was going. There was the man who was willing to trade seats with my mil so that she did not have to sit by herself. There was the group of wait listed passengers who had been waiting so long they'd become friends and cheered for each other as they were able to get on the flight, some of them into first class! There was the man who noticed th...

Mount Vernon Inspiration

Image
Since we rented a car during this visit to DC we thought we should make our way out to visit George Washington's home at Mount Vernon. The property is amazing and the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association who keeps up the home and property do an amazing job. George and Martha Washington are buried on the property. There is also a memorial to all the slaves buried on the property.  Unfortunately none of them have individual markers. We also splurged and took the cruise along the Potomac at Mount Vernon. Mount Vernon is in the background here.  "The wind and Humidity WAS not kind to my hair"???  Do I know my grammar?  Questionable. The view of Mount Vernon from the river was gorgeous! The cruise gave us a different view of the Washington Monument and the airport. Fort Washington is just a little north of Mount Vernon on the Maryland side of the river.  There was a lot of bird life along the river. These...

MLK Jr. and more

Image
This week I am in Washington DC helping my daughter to find an apartment for Grad school.  This evening we took a few moments to go see the new Martin Luther King Jr. memorial on the mall. It is amazing! That is my Mother-in-law and Daughter standing in front of the monument. It is enormous. I love that there is a giant "mountain of despair" in which the statue was carved. The detail in the statue is amazing. We also walked over to the Lincoln Memorial.  My Mil's feet would not allow her to take another step at that point.   . . .Not even to the elevator. . . So we sat and entertained ourselves while my daughter went up to the monument. I love these half face photos.  They always make me laugh. This one was my favorite of us.  The Jefferson memorial was beautiful with the reflection in the water.  The last memorial we visited today was the Korean War Memorial.  The etchings of all the fallen soldie...
