Dye Party 2021

Image
For many years my quilt guild, Quilter's Holladay, has had an annual Dye Party. It's been my pleasure to be in charge of the party for a few years now. Sadly, Covid kept us from partying last year, so we were even more excited to all be vaccinated and able to party again this year! There were 15 people participating in the dyeing, and another 5-8 people who came just to visit. One of Betty Jo's beautiful trees in her amazing backyard. I do love a good tree. The sun was shining in to the branches in an amazing way. The photo does not do it justice. Dyeing with Friends

It's that time of year! Time for the annual Quilter's Holladay quilt guild dye party.   Always a lot of fun! Anne  (in yellow) always does a great job of teaching at our dye parties.  She had everyone's undivided attention. As I looked around I realized there were lots of familiar faces but we also have a lot of new members this year.  I love that we were able to share our passion with new people. Anne asked me to demonstrate ice dyeing again this year. I taught how to do regular ice dyeing and. . .  . . .parfait ice dyeing.   I really like using this glass containers for parfait demonstrations because everyone can see the pretty colors.  During Anne's presentation she recommended NOT using complimentary colors in the same ziplock bag because you get lots of browns.   So what did I do?   I used complimentary colors. I'm a rebel like that. I'm really not sure what I was saying in this next photo when m...

Catching the Dye Bug

Anne and I taught a class on fabric dyeing at the Utah Quiltfest last week.  We had a great group of women in class.  Anne demonstrated all the basics of dyeing. . . (here she is showing how to do the magic of dyeing!) . . .stamping and painting. . .  . . . ziplock bag dyeing. . . . . . gradation dyeing. . . . . .and marbling. I loved Sylvia's marble dye over. It goes so well with her gloves. ;) I taught how to do ice parfait dyeing.  The ladies really enjoyed this method.  The results from everything were gorgeous!        The St. George weather was perfect and we were so happy to have a bright beautiful spot to let it all dry.

Dye Results

Last Month I Dyed with Friends  at my quilt guild's dye party and I have finally taken the time to take photos and post the results. I tried out some basic shibori by wrapping a fat quarter around a stainless steel water bottle and securing it with rubber bands.  The second shibori piece was wrapped around an empty plastic container.  I thought the blue and yellow would mix more but I guess I didn't put enough dye or get it wet enough? After doing the ice dyeing and shibori I'm not a big fan of my painted fabric. These first four Ice Dye Parfait pieces are fat quarters and were in the same parfait. These two pieces weren't a parfait despite the fact that I marked them that way.  I just remembered that I did them separately to show the difference between using small and large pieces of ice.  The first piece was done with large pieces of ice from my freezer.  The second piece was done with crushed ice purchased from my favorite ...
