Something About Nothing

I started this piece in January, during a class with Leslie Jenison at Craft Napa. I added more and more to it. But I just wasn't liking it. . . so I ripped it apart. Did you realize your sewing machine foot can make an excellent third hand when you are ripping apart fabrics? Especially when using Havel's Seam Ripper. Sorry this is a bit dark.  Soon it was all just pieces.  And I ended up with a few bits and pieces on me. He thinks he's helping!   These two always seem to be in mix.  I really like the houses which I accidentally made and decided to make lot's more.  And then the houses needed some trees. The progression of one of my trees.  And it's coming along!

Recently Quilting Arts Magazine put out a reader challenge to make a 14" square art quilt to donate to The House Quilt Project.   The quilts are donated to Furnishing Hope , an organization that furnishes homes for previously homeless people. I have made a couple of quilts for them in the past and was happy to contribute another.

I received a lot of great suggestions as to where to place the flag on my townhouse quilt so I printed out a few different flags (as well as the label) onto a piece of TAP ( Transfer Artist Paper ), then ironed the transfers onto  Mistyfused  fabric. . . . . . so I could try the flags out in different areas. First on the right side of the door. . .  . . .flying on top of the building. . .  . . . and hanging from the top of the building. I decided to go with the flag flying  from the top of the building to offset the tree.   I took the piece to my friend Juliette's house  so that I could quilt it on her lovely Bernina 440 .   And so I could visit with Juliette. Pretty sure I did more visiting than quilting (more about that later in the week) but in the end it was all good because I finished the quilt! Thank you everyone for your suggestions! It all started with a drawing that was too complex  for the small quilt I wanted to make. . . . . .I simplified. . . And simplified . . .and then created the main house fabric  from a piece that didn't dye as dark as I wanted for another project  (more on that one on Monday).  I stenciled bricks in two colors . . .  . . .And added some sparkly paint too.  Then I Taped off the windows and door. . . . . . And covered them in black. . .  . . .I covered the black with a white pen. The main house is done  but because this quilt is for The House Quilt Project   I still need to figure out where the flag will go. . . . . .hanging from top . . . . . . window. . . . . .flying from top. . . Where do you think the flag should go?
