Ana Lisa Hedstrom

Image
*I am attempting to catch up on my blog this month by posting everyday.  I will be back dating the posts, but they will be done at least once a day through the month of December.  Heber, Utah The Utah Surface Design Group brought Ana Lisa Hedstrom in to teach Shibori dyeing.  I was so excited for this class as I found out about the class just shortly after I purchased all of Ana Lisa's DVDs ! Ana Lisa wrapping a pole  I learned a lot from the DVDs but there is nothing like taking a class in person.  So many more tips and hints in person! Pole Painting Debbi Sigg , always having fun!  We learned Arashi (aka - pole wrapping), as well as Itajime (fabric folding with wrapping and sewing). After the first couple of days I started to feel off; Extra tired, and weak. I stuck it out for another day or two, I can't recall now, but then decided it was the extra altitude that was getting to me. Sadly, I ended up missin...

Monoprinting in Heber

Image
Last Saturday was Monoprinting day at my friend, Timmy's studio in Heber.  I rode up with another friend, DeAnna, who needed to make a stop at the hardware store on the way up.  We spent a lot of time looking at all the gadgets and gizmos and figuring out what might make lovely marks in our mono printing. Looking at mark making items is almost as much fun as the making!  Before we got started printing, Polly (far left) showed us a couple of pieces she is working on which she created using monoprinted fabrics and lots of lovely hand stitching. She was hoping to include these pieces at her show that starts today (Friday, April 17th) at the Charley Hafen Jewelers Gallery.  Timmy has many lovely collections at her studio in Heber.  She recently had rods installed so that she could display all of her beautiful handmade purses.  She has made a few but most of them have been purchased from artists around the world.  This bea...

Sunflowers for Susan

Image
Last month I packed up some supplies and headed out. . .  . . .to my friend Timmy Burton's studio in beautiful Heber, Utah. Earlier in the summer I created some hand dyed fabrics and decided that this orange and yellow piece would be perfect for Susan's Sunflower piece.  This photo looks kind of green but you can see in the other two photos that it is very orange and yellow.  It reminds me of summer!   Timmy has a thermofax machine so I created a screen of a sunflower from a copyright free image I found online. I created a couple different shades of Jacquard brown textile paint to fill the fabric with lots of sunflowers. I wanted the look of a field of small sunflowers. I like how it turned out! I really love the fabric's the rest of the ladies have created for Susan this month. So much creativity in this group! Stop by The Printed Fabric Bee blog or Susan Purney Mark 's blog and leave a comment for a chance to win this month...

Tie Dyeing

Image
My friend Lynn Dell Swapp is a wonderful fiber artist. Back in the day, she sold tie dyed t-shirts and tapestries out of the back of her van along Highway 101 in Oregon. This past weekend Lynn Dell (center), Diane (left), Bev and I went up to our friend, Timmy's studio to learn a few of Lynn Dell's tricks. With Lynn Dell's help, Diane folded two large 100% cotton sheets. Here is the critter she ended up making with the first one. We thought it looked like a mutant turtle - it just wasn't very ninja. ;) Diane used a dish drainer turned upside down in a tray as a base while she added the dyes to her fabric. I took an awkward selfie to prove that I was really there. I only folded some smaller pieces of fabric. Deformed camel? Dog with an excessively large tail as well as a small tail? What do you see? This the folded chevron snake - the backside is about to get more dye. The next day we put all the creatures onto the ground and spr...

Fun Adventure

Image
I took an unexpected adventure last week up to Heber, Utah.  My friend Timmy has a beautiful property with a wonderful studio. Timmy allowed us to use her studio to learn some tie dye techniques. I'll put up a post about the tie dyeing on Thursday. While we were dyeing, Timmy was preparing cucumbers for pickling.  They were soooo good!  I walked past this feather and thought it needed it's picture taken. Just before I left I received a package filled with Artist Trading Card's from an Artist Cellar exchange I participated in.  I love looking at each little piece and enjoying the work each artist created with the Artist Cellar Stencils.
