Quiltfolk Magazine - Utah

Image
I first discovered Quiltfolk while at Craft Napa, and while in Houston I decided it was time to subscribe. It is a quarterly, ad-free magazine, which tells the stories of the people behind the quilts.  The stories are wonderful and the photos gorgeous! Each issue concentrates on one state. I received my first issue in the mail, issue 9, and low and behold it was about Utah! As I flipped through the pages I noticed that one of the articles was about the Springville quilt show where my friends and I enter some of our quilts every year. I flipped to the article wondering if any of my friend's quilts were pictured. I was shocked to see MY QUILT "Letting Go," on page 105, and there is my name too! I was giddy! Such an unexpected joy! And then I discovered my friend, Anne Munoz' quilt, "Weather Forecast." !!! Anne is a good friend, and mentor. She taught me how to dye fabric and inspires me continually. I look forward to...

Fabric Shopping In Oakland

Image
Do you believe this meme? I do! And when I travel is when I enjoy the hobby of collecting most. I love to visit local shops and see if I can find an unusual piece (or two) of fabric.  After Craft Napa, Libby Williamson and I stopped at a couple of wonderful shops in the bay area and I thought I would share what we found. Our first stop was at A Verb for Keeping Warm . Libby immediately fell in love with this indigo linen.  The shop is filled with beautiful yarns and fabrics.  They are big in to weaving and natural dyeing.  They carry a lot of natural fabrics.  I really enjoyed browsing, and wished I had more room in my suitcase.  I purchased a lovely piece of linen which I hope to dye and stamp on.  Our second stop was to Stone Mountain and Daughter Fabric.  It is a HUGE store! Two large rooms of every type of fabric.  My favorite part was the giant wall of b...

Quilt Market/Festival - The People

Image
While away in Houston my phone decided to take a swim in the spa for a brief minute! After a day of dry out time, it finally took a charge again but it would not sync with my laptop in any way, shape or form.  I had no way to put photos on the blog without it!  I continued to try to get the phone to connect with my laptop every day in hopes that something would change - I know it's crazy to keep doing the same thing over and over and expect a change BUT this time it worked!  One week later and my phone has decided to talk to the computer again and so NOW I may blog! The days are kind of meshed together in my mind so I've decided to do several posts, each with a different theme, and since the most important part of Quilt Market and Festival are the people, I will start with them. I caught this great photo of Iris, owner of Mistyfuse.   She is a passionate, wonderful woman and I cannot tell you how much I love her.  I'm not the only one who loves her as t...

Another Early Project

Image
When I pulled out the Cookie Monster quilt for my blog hop post, I pulled out another early baby quilt to photograph and thought I would share it today. When I became pregnant for the first time ultrasounds were not done.  I had no idea if I would be having a boy or a girl.  I decided to decorate the nursery in a nice gender neutral yellow (surprisingly his favorite color 26 years later is yellow!). I decided to hand quilt hearts across the quilt with yarn.  The quilt has been well loved by four children.   The flannel on the back has not held up as well as the rest of the fabric. Maybe someday I will repair it when I have grandchildren. Do you still have an early quilt project you love?

How I Started Sewing/Quilting - Blog Hop

Image
This is the seventh stop on a 10-stop blog hop exploring how quilters and sewists got started quilting and sewing.  The complete list of blogs, with links, is at the end of this post. I have always had an interest in creating. Fabric, thread, and yarn have always been my friends. My first "sewing" pieces were created by wrapping fabrics around my dolls.  They were very fashionable mummies!  I finally learned real sewing skills in Mrs. DeGroot's Home Ec class at Cicero Elementary.  Our first project was to make aprons so that we could work in the school cafeteria.  It was a big stepping stone into growing up! My first experience with quilting was during high school.  The young women and our leaders at church got together to tie a quilt.  I was amazed by the wooden frames, the great big long needles and the concept of tying two pieces of fabric and batting together to make a blanket.  I had never seen anything like it!  I convinc...

Presto Chango Jelly Roll Quilt

Image
I made this jelly roll quilt after watching a video on line from Missouri Quilt Company.   My friend, Nancy, put together a  jelly roll of bright and lovely Jane Sassaman fabrics  from the quilt shop and within an hour I had a quilt top.  Another hour and it was quilted and then it was promptly hung at the quilt shop. When I got the quilt back last week I decided I wanted to switch it up a bit. So after a chop here and a chop there: I have a reversible quilt. What do you think?
