Making Stencils

I've found a new use for my new toy, the Silhouette Portrait:
Stencil Making!
 Here is my first totally original stencil I designed and then cut out of transparency plastic with my Silhouette.  The design is kind of hard to see with just the plain plastic on this piece of card stock but. . .
. . .a bit easier once I painted over the top with a stamp pad.  Too bad I didn't move the stencil off the page all the way.
I decided to use the stencil with my other favorite toy, the Gelli Plate.
Usually I remember to place the stencil on the plate backwards so that the print comes out forwards but mistakes will be made. . .
. . .so that I can learn and then correct the mistake.
I really like how these came out!
The second stencil I made is from this photo of fireworks I took last July 4th.  I isolated one of the fireworks in photoshop, duplicated it, cleaned it up and turned it into a png file with the intention of making a thermofax with the image but since I haven't done that yet. . . .
I made it into a stencil and used it to make monoprints with my Gelli plate.
Wow, this photo is very orange.
 Despite that, I really love the way these turned out!
The far left is a print made with the stencil still on the Gelli Plate and the rest of them were made from various combinations of prints with and without the stencil on the plate.  
I think I am in trouble.  
I absolutely LOVE stencils and I always have.  
I have stencils that are 25 years old or more and it's looking like I will be making a lot more stencils.

Wow, great idea! I make a lot of interfacing stencils, but not much plastic. I mostly use them with a blank silkscreen.

I have got to look up that machine! I've been playing with some stencil design ideas using an ipad app call Stencils that have me wanting to make some in"real" life.

How very cool!
My DH bought me a different cutter last year, but I've never used it as it only uses that company's designs and I can't cut stencils of my own art for surface design. Useless to me.
This, on the other hand, sounds just like what I wanted in the first place!

I love what you're doing. Being low-tech I tend to make stencils out of things to hand - so in the past I have vut shapes from various easy-to-cut materials with an art knife or scissors - most recent was from some heavy duty fabric - advantage LARGE and can be rolled for storage - blogged the details november 2012 at htt[://www.alisonschwabe.com/weblog/

Gelli Plate Tutorial with Leaves

Here's the Gelli Plate Tutorial you asked for! My Gelli plate has been well used and well loved. 1. Place Gelli Plate on a flat, covered working surface, and place small dots of paint onto the plate.  My demo photos are with me using acrylics and paper but it works exactly the same with fabric paint and fabric.  I like using Jacquard Textile paint when I make fabric prints. 2. Use a brayer to spread the paint evenly across the plate. 3.  I used the leaves as a resist for the first print. 4. Place the paper/fabric on top of the printing plate and smooth it out nicely to get an even print. 5.  Carefully lift up the paper/fabric. Found a photo from when I printed the fabric - see same process. This is a first print. 5.  I know that MONOprinting means ONE print but seriously, when you remove the leaves from the plate there are these beautifully textured leaves left on the plate just dying to be printed.  I couldn't ignore them!  So this is wher

Quilt National

My husband and I took a red-eye flight to Columbus, Ohio, and then drove the one hour to Athens, Ohio, to attend the opening of the Quilt National quilt show where my piece, Wild Flowers was being shown. Made a stop at Tim Horton's, a Canadian chain for some delicious breakfast sandwiches and donut holes. We went to the Kennedy Art Museum, on the Ohio University campus. This is the side of the building. Photo of the front of the building from the cleveland.com website. The building was designed in the 1860s by Cleveland architect Levi Scofield, and was originally part of the Athen's Lunatic Asylum. It opened in 1996 as the Kennedy Museum of Art. There were some lovely prints, paintings and exhibits. It didn't take long to tour, which was good for my knees. I was glad to be able to see this Elizabeth Catlett print. I admire her work. Autumn is for the Birds

I was thrilled when my friend Jamie Fingal ask me to create something using her new fabric line, Autumn is for the Birds, from Hoffman Fabrics. I decided to use my favorite method of creating: free form piecing.  When I create a quilt with this method I rarely plan anything out, other than perhaps a general size and a few elements.  The problem with this method is that I often have to rearrange as I go.  And sometimes I need to unpick - a LOT.  I took a few photos as I went to help me get an idea of where things were going and then based upon those photos I added or changed.  I put the photos together in a short power point so that you could see a little bit of my process.  I apologize for the dark photos as my design wall is in a dark hallway but I think it still gives you a good idea of how things went.
