Marked Giveaway

I am very excited to have been asked to help introduce my friend
Lynn Krawczyk as Artistcellar's newest Signature Series Artist!  I was given a set of her new stencils, Marked, to play with.  I will also be giving away a set of this lovely stencil set!  More on that later.

I love playing with stencils and decided I would use Lynn's stencils to create mono-prints with my Gelli Plate, which I would then use to make ATC's (artist trading cards).
However, before the paint even touched the stencils I used them to create a few masks.
 A little tracing, and a little cutting, gave me these fun pieces from her Tracks stencil.
Oh wouldn't these make lovely railroad tracks, or zipper tracks?!
Anyway, unfortunately once I get going with monoprinting I forget all about taking photos!  I should have video taped myself!  You can view a video I made of my multi-layer technique here.
 I don't bother cleaning my stencils inbetween creating the layers, and I think the stencils look like beautiful works of art all on their own.  The stencils are very sturdy and I'm sure after a soaking in water the paint would wash right off if I wanted it off.
I enjoyed combining Lynn's designs to make the backgrounds for my ATC's.
I used a yellow card stock to practice designing backgrounds before making my final prints onto squares of 140 lb. Mixed Media Vellum finish paper.


 Once the backgrounds were created, I cut the paper into 2 1/2 x 3 1/2" rectangles and drew designs using black Sharpie Marker and white Sharpie Poster paint marker.
I also painted here and there to create more depth in each design.

When I print it is rarely for a specific project - it's to build inventory. Until now on fabric, but am branching out to paper. I would relax, play and see what transpired - Lynn's stencils would be a good head start.

The first thing I'd try would be using the stencils on fabric with Softscrub (discharge) to make printed fabric. I'd also like to try them with Inkodye on fabric. I'd like to make some printed panels to incorporate In to my hand sewn clothing. I also make art Plush, and I think these stencils would make great patterns on fabric to be used as "skins". Lots of possibilities!

Your ATC's are beautiful... I like the idea of making a mask too - who knew?!! Let's see - what would I create with Lynn's stencils... the sky's the limit so who knows what direction they would take me in!

You are so right about stencils becoming works of art with all the layers of paint. Plus, you get to remember past projects as you work on new. Your ATC's are beautiful. I love how you added the "pearl" shape around the flower center.

I'm helping my husband the woodworker with a funky project. I've suggested using grill cloth decorated in bright patterns to add a color punch to his design, and these would be perfect for it. After that I'd use them in card-making and art journaling. :)

Here's the Gelli Plate Tutorial you asked for! My Gelli plate has been well used and well loved. 1. Place Gelli Plate on a flat, covered working surface, and place small dots of paint onto the plate.  My demo photos are with me using acrylics and paper but it works exactly the same with fabric paint and fabric.  I like using Jacquard Textile paint when I make fabric prints. 2. Use a brayer to spread the paint evenly across the plate. 3.  I used the leaves as a resist for the first print. 4. Place the paper/fabric on top of the printing plate and smooth it out nicely to get an even print. 5.  Carefully lift up the paper/fabric. Found a photo from when I printed the fabric - see same process. Quilt National

My husband and I took a red-eye flight to Columbus, Ohio, and then drove the one hour to Athens, Ohio, to attend the opening of the Quilt National quilt show where my piece, Wild Flowers was being shown. Made a stop at Tim Horton's, a Canadian chain for some delicious breakfast sandwiches and donut holes. We went to the Kennedy Art Museum, on the Ohio University campus. This is the side of the building. Photo of the front of the building from the cleveland.com website. The building was designed in the 1860s by Cleveland architect Levi Scofield, and was originally part of the Athen's Lunatic Asylum. It opened in 1996 as the Kennedy Museum of Art. There were some lovely prints, paintings and exhibits. It didn't take long to tour, which was good for my knees. I was glad to be able to see this Elizabeth Catlett print. I admire her work. Fabric Printing at Home Blog Tour

About two months ago I wrote a review about the book Fabric Printing at Home written by my friend, Julie B. Booth . Today I'm going to show you one of the things I learned from her book and then give you an opportunity to win a copy of the book for yourself. I used a hot glue gun to create a design onto a toilet paper roll.  I was impatient and didn't seal the toilet paper roll with white glue or a gel medium before creating my design.   I inserted a short roller handle that one can find at the local hardware store into the toilet paper roll. . .   . . . and used my 3x5" Gelli Plate as a paint palette.  I rolled the paint across a sample piece of fabric. . . . . .first going long ways. . .  . . .and then again short ways.
