Autumn is for the Birds

I was thrilled when my friend Jamie Fingal ask me to create something using her new fabric line, Autumn is for the Birds, from Hoffman Fabrics.

I decided to use my favorite method of creating: free form piecing.  When I create a quilt with this method I rarely plan anything out, other than perhaps a general size and a few elements.  The problem with this method is that I often have to rearrange as I go.  And sometimes I need to unpick - a LOT.  I took a few photos as I went to help me get an idea of where things were going and then based upon those photos I added or changed.  I put the photos together in a short power point so that you could see a little bit of my process.  I apologize for the dark photos as my design wall is in a dark hallway but I think it still gives you a good idea of how things went.

The final quilt is approximately 30"x 37".
I love the focus fabrics!  There are a lot of textures in all of the fabrics.  Honestly, I could have quilted the Bluebird fabric, given it a border or two and been very happy with it!  But I always like to mix things up a bit.

And because I love to make more than I need too,
I made a set of wings for my teenage daughter to put on a backpack.
She saw a Kawaii style backpack with wings and asked if I could make her a pair.  She helped me to design the wings and now we just need to find the perfect backpack to put them on!

What do you think you would make if you were given some Autumn is for the Birds fabric?  Leave a comment here on my blog or any of the other blogs in the hop, for your chance to win a fat quarter stack generously donated by Hoffman Fabrics. (Sorry US Residents only)

Very cute! I love free piecing and I'm like you. No plan. If I won some of the fabrics, I'd hoard them for awhile before free piecing some sort of hanging. I LOVE the wings!!!!!

I love Jamie's fabric collections...they practically beg to be cut and sliced and diced into whatever the imagination can conjure. I never feel more free and have more fun than when I am playing with Jamie's fabrics. I am amazed by the variety of approaches and beautiful results that emerge from the same fabric. Love the wings!!

That quilt! Those wings! Love them.
Love this even though green isn't my favourite colour. I'll never tried free style cutting and piecing but I think I might just have a go now.

I would probably make something practical like a table runner in a free style form. Then I would have to go buy enough bird fabric to make some place mats and then a stripe for some napkins. Would make for a dynamite table

I would love to make some improv wonky blocks (in a Gee's Bend style)
But I also see using these as elements for a pictorial quilt....
The line is delightfully inspiring.
I love the wings especially! great ideas. Thanks!

I have no idea what I would use the fabric for but would need to "pet it" and study it first to be sure but since I love making purses and bags I am thinking they would work well in a project like that.

love the back pack idea, flying through school work... so many items can be made with this fabric.
That is a great wall hanging! Jamie's fabrics spur one to take risks, don't they. I love the wings for the backpack -- I think I need some just for everyday wearing to work.

Hi Lisa- So impressed by this quilt and how it came together!
Wings on a backpack! Fun! I think I would make a quilt to donate to the local domestic violence shelter. They need pretty quilts to comfort and heal the residents.
